I had the kids plant some seeds and grow a "garden" in our classroom last year after returning from Spring Break, and I knew I wanted to do it again this year. Each week we observe and record the growth, it's something for them to look forward to, and it incorporates Spring into the classroom.
Last year, the kids took the plants home for Mother's Day so we never got to see a flower actually bloom in the classroom. This year, it was my goal to see a flower bloom. And we did. Two of them (nasturtiums, I believe). Very soon after the second bloom, I could tell the plants were ready for bigger and better things, and so the kids took them home.
I loved having a classroom garden these past two springs. I will always remember them as the starting point to my green thumb. I will always remember the kids reaction when a major growth of some kind occurred. Plants are cool.
